This December, Taking Shape is organizing a custom trip for interested athletes from Benedictine College who can share their love of sports and leadership with the children of Port au Prince, Haiti.

Below are just a couple of facts of this impoverished area where we have been called to serve:

  • Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and only 90 minutes from Miami, Florida by airplane. Poverty, corruption, and poor access to education for much of the population are among Haiti’s most serious disadvantages.

  • 69% of Haitians live below the poverty line, making less than $2 a day. Less than 50% of the children of Haiti attend school. Many do not experience consistent education or access to organized activity.

  • 80% of the children in orphanages in Haiti have living parents. Children are placed in orphanages because parents do not have health, education or social resources.

  • According to UNICEF, only 30% of Haitians have access to clean drinking water. Half of the people in Haiti do not know how to read or write.

  • 1 in 8 children in Haiti will die before the age of five from treatable and/or curable diseases.
